Study, Work & Travel – Sailing Syllabus
INTERACTIVE NAUTICAL SYLLABUS & STUDY MATERIAL
Foreword
Whatever the forms of travel by water we decide on, it is the only human venture can include three things––study, work and travel. And despite anything objectionable, that can be written about it. It is the most desirable aspect of life taken.
This is the essence of a motive for the interactive syllabus. Encompass and collect material. Ease of accessibility, to assist anyone who wants to upgrade his knowledge, skill, adhere to the legal requirements of any administration or jurisdiction. And to safely and securely navigate for pleasure or commerce––boat or yacht.
How to use interactive syllabus
The simple way to use this interactive syllabus is to look through the module section groups first. Afterword, based on your learning material, try to extrapolate what explanation or clarification you need.
Otherwise, if you are someone that is just interested in maritime navigation and thinking about doing a basic navigational course or similar. Go to the end of this webpage, and list through some of known course programs, and try links from the syllabus list for a swift description of subject.
If perplexed by ship theory included in the boat-yacht interactive syllabus. Simple guideline––more knowledge or better explanation, gives better perspective to a specific module or subject. Since selected administrations or jurisdictions use fragments or entire merchant shipping syllabus for boat-yacht course requirements.
The best approach is to enjoy the knowledge and good judgment. Or to be informed about diverse interpretations of others. Still, want to lose sleep or make someone for the fun of it, lose sleep, then read the selection of the following definitions.
Definitions – Boat, Ship, Yacht
“Boat: A boat is any vessel or conveyance that floats on or operates on the water and is under 197 feet (60 meters) length overall (LOA). A boat may be used for pleasure, commercial, or residential purposes. Boat is synonymous with small craft in marine use.
Ship: A ship is any vessel or conveyance that floats on or operates on the water and is equal to or larger than 197 feet (60 meters) length overall (LOA). A ship may be used for pleasure, commercial, or residential purposes.
The size breakpoint between boat and ship is necessarily arbitrary; however, Lloyd’s small-craft division deals with vessels under 60 meters. Experience has also shown that below 60 meters LOA, longitudinal-strength (hogging-and-sagging) calculations are usually trivial, whereas over 60 meters these calculations become important. These are two firm reasons for setting 60 meters as the division between boats and ships.
Yacht: A yacht is any moderately large vessel or conveyance that floats on the water, which is used for pleasure, not for commercial purposes. The exception is that some yachts are chartered with professional crew to paying passengers, who then primarily use the yacht for pleasure. Such a vessel is a charter yacht.
There is no firm lower-end cut-off for the size of a yacht; however, it can generally be said that a vessel or conveyance used on the water for pleasure, approximately under 30 feet (9.1 meters) LOA is a not a yacht but a pleasure boat or recreational boat ... (see table for a wider context illustration).
Most yachts are boats, but not all yachts are boats. Some very large vessels have been built entirely for private pleasure and pleasure-charter use, a few over 400 feet (122 meters) LOA. Such vessels are ships that are yachts.”… Read more: Gerr, D. - Boat terms
Therefore, with all formal and informal definitions, a “super yacht captain” on anything smaller than 197 feet (60 meters) overall length is just a master of a boat. That means you are a navigator. Baffled by a statement? Historically, anyone titled or ranked master1 was just a navigator2. And if not baffled enough––legal deliberation cannot articulate about ships or vessels. But we sourly not have boats, conveyances, contrivance nor do we? Read more: Gauci, G. 2016: Is It a Vessel, a Ship or a Boat, Is It Just a Craft, Or Is It Merely a Contrivance? MODULE 13: RANKS, TITLES AND DESIGNATIONS
To ensure coordination onboard a vessel, certain procedures and order of hierarchy amongst the mariners onboard is necessary. The process embraces ranking and responsibility system that allow for disciplined and efficient operations and promote applicable management.
The merchant navy general categorization of deck, engine and catering departments are universally accepted, together with ranks and responsibilities. As with any system, we can find different practices. And those practices can be by historical tradition, legal decision of administration, or company regulations.
Similarly, certain administrations recognize ranks and others only titles––so, that rank and ranking would not impede on other administration given ranks. But to maintain a balance with recreational and yacht theme, an interesting example is Spain. The jurisdiction includes recreational ranking into the navy system as an auxiliary part.
In an environment of various options and elements, a diagram of wider departmental categorization, with other components tied to vessel management and ranking, adds to the illustrative viewpoint for improved designation and responsibility that enables to distribute assignments in a professional and formal manner.
